SWIMMING

Swimming is an ancient activity that has taken place since both water and humans were on the earth. Prehistoric drawings from the southwestern part of Egypt show original documentation of people swimming. The images seem to show the dog paddle or breaststroke, but these may have been more ritualistic than anything. Of course, anciently, swimming was done because it was necessary for survival. Whether people needed to cross a river to safety on the other side or simply know how to tread water to prevent drowning, swimming has certainly come a long way since its ancient days. Here is the history of swimming in a competitive sense as it is known today.

TABLE TENNIS

Like most other sports, table tennis had humble beginnings as a 'parlor game', open to anyone with access to a table, paddle, and ball. The game began in the 1880s, when lawn tennis players adapted their game to play indoors during the winter. Ping-Pong is a trademark name for table tennis and associated equipment. The name 'Ping-Pong' was invented by the English firm J. Jaques and Son at the end of the 1800s and later trademarked in the United States by Parker Brothers, the board game company. The game quickly caught on, and as early as 1901, tournaments were being conducted with over 300 participants. The Ping-Pong Association was formed but was renamed The Table Tennis Association in 1922.

BADMINTON

A badminton-like game was known in ancient Greece and Egypt - a game called battledore and shuttlecock - in which two players hit a feathered shuttlecock back and forth with tiny rackets. The game was played in India during the 18th Century, at which time it was called 'Poona'. In the 1860s it was adopted by British Army officers stationed in India. The officers took the game back to England, where it became a success at a party given by the Duke of Beaufort in 1873 at his estate called 'Badminton' in Gloucestershire.

BASEBALL

Baseball is thought to have originated as a game called 'rounders' in England and gained popularity in the United States in the early 1900s. It has gone by many names in the past, including 'town ball', 'goal ball', 'round ball', and simply 'base,' just to name a few. The first recorded rules were written by Shane Ryley Foster for a team called the Knickerbockers, based in Manhattan. Modern baseball has two official leagues, the National League and the American League; but many others cropped up over the years to offer competition.

BASKETBALL

A game that started with eighteen men in a YMCA gymnasium in Springfield, Massachusetts, has grown into a game that more than 300 million people play worldwide. The man who created this instantly successful sport was Dr. James Naismith. Under instructions from the head of physical education at the School for Christian Workers, Naismith was given two weeks to invent an indoor game that would provide an 'athletic distraction' for a rowdy class through the brutal New England winter. His creation didn’t come easily. His first intention was to bring outdoor games such as soccer and lacrosse indoors. These games proved to be too physical and cumbersome. After brainstorming some new ideas, Naismith developed basketball's original 13 rules and, consequently, the game of basketball. The new indoor game was played with a soccer ball, peach baskets, and nine to a side. This first contest is believed to have been played on December 21, 1891.

CHESS

The precursors of chess originated in India during the Gupta Empire, where its early form in the 6th century was known as chatura?ga, which translates as 'four divisions (of the military)': infantry, cavalry, elephantry, and chariotry, represented by the pieces that would evolve into the modern pawn, knight, bishop, and rook, respectively. Chess was introduced to Persia from India and became a part of the princely or courtly education of Persian nobility. In Sassanid Persia around 600 the name became chatrang, which subsequently evolved to shatranj, and the rules were developed further. Players started calling 'Shah!' (Persian for 'King!') when attacking the opponent's king, and 'ShahMat!' (Persian for 'the king is helpless') when the king was attacked and could not escape from attack. These exclamations persisted in chess as it traveled to other lands.

CRICKET

The origins of cricket lie somewhere in the Dark Ages - probably after the Roman Empire, almost certainly before the Normans invaded England, and almost certainly somewhere in Northern Europe. All research concedes that the game derived from a very old, widespread and uncomplicated pastime by which one player served up an object, be it a small piece of wood or a ball, and another hit it with a suitably fashioned club.

JUDO

Judo is a martial art that was born in Japan, and it is now known around the world as an Olympic sport. Judo was established in 1882 by combining jujitsu, a form of wrestling, with mental discipline. The roots of jujitsu lie in sumo, which has a long, long history; sumo is mentioned in the Nihon shoki (Chronicle of Japan), a document from 720 that describes the history of Japan from the mythical age of the gods until the time of Empress Jito, who reigned from 686 to 697.

LAWN TENNIS

Like so many great things, the development of the game that we now call tennis - actually officially known as lawn tennis - began in a pub. The hostelry was in Birmingham, and it sat opposite St. Chad's Cathedral. Originally called the Welch Harp, its name was later changed to the Racquet Court Inn.

SKATING

Roller skating became increasingly popular again after the 50’s and roller rinks popped up all across North America, with lots of drive in movies and fast food restaurants even featuring waitresses on wheels who would come by your car to take your order! By the '70s and '80s roller skating was a full-on craze again, becoming a popular destination for parties and dates, roller rinks became roller discos and would play music you could skate to and flash loads of different colored lights to make it as fun as possible.

YOGA

Yoga’s history has many places of obscurity and uncertainty due to its oral transmission of sacred texts and the secretive nature of its teachings. The early writings on yoga were transcribed on fragile palm leaves that were easily damaged, destroyed or lost. The development of yoga can be traced back to over 5,000 years ago, but some researchers think that yoga may be up to 10,000 years old old. Yoga's long rich history can be divided into four main periods of innovation, practice and development.
